The Controller Role

A Controller owns the accounting engine of the company: the close, the general ledger, payroll, payables and receivables, cash, and the controls that keep financial reporting accurate and on time.

Day to day, the Controller runs the monthly close, reconciles and reviews the books, prepares financial statements and management reporting, supports audit and tax, and works with operators so the numbers reflect what is really happening in each unit.

In a multi unit hospitality business the role is also about scale. Strong Controllers build processes and systems that hold up as the company adds locations or concepts, and they develop an accounting team that can run them.

Candidates usually come from Controller, Assistant Controller or accounting manager roles in multi unit restaurant, hospitality or franchise organizations, often with public accounting experience earlier in their careers.
