The Regional Director of Operations Role

A Regional Director of Operations runs a group of restaurants through their General Managers. The job is to deliver the region's numbers, sales, margin, labor and guest scores, while keeping every unit true to the brand and building the leaders who will run the next ones.

Day to day, the Regional Director is in the restaurants: walking the floor and the kitchen, reviewing results with the GM, coaching, and fixing what is not working. Back at the desk, the role owns the regional P&L, the forecast, staffing plans, the hiring pipeline for managers and the calendar of openings, remodels and projects.

The best Regional Directors are developers of people first. They hire well, promote from within, and build benches deep enough that a GM promotion or a new opening does not weaken the units left behind. They also carry the company's standards into every store, so food, service and cleanliness look the same across the region.

Candidates typically come from multi unit roles such as Area Director, District Manager or Director of Operations in high volume, full service or upscale casual groups, usually after a strong run as a General Manager.
