The Restaurant Manager Role
A Restaurant Manager runs the dining room on their shifts. The General Manager owns the whole business; the Restaurant Manager owns the floor while the doors are open, leading the front of house team, managing the pace of service and making sure every guest leaves happy.
Day to day, the Restaurant Manager opens or closes, sets the floor plan, runs the pre shift, coaches servers and bartenders in the moment, handles guest issues and watches the numbers that move during a shift: labor, comps, cash and sales. The role also keeps the room clean, safe and on brand.
Restaurant Managers grow into Assistant General Managers and General Managers by learning the back half of the business: scheduling, cost control, hiring and the P&L. In a high volume restaurant that path can be fast for managers who build strong teams and consistent service.
Candidates usually come from Restaurant Manager, Shift Leader or Bar Manager roles in busy full service, upscale casual or fast casual restaurants.
