The Catering Sales Director Role

A Catering Sales Director sells and books a venue's private events: weddings, corporate meetings and dinners, member celebrations and social functions. In a private club, the role also protects the member experience, so the calendar has to work for the club as much as for the client.

Day to day, the job is prospecting, touring, proposing and closing. The Director manages inquiries, builds relationships with planners and corporate accounts, writes proposals and contracts, and sets the event calendar. Once an event is booked, the Director builds the BEO and hands it to culinary and banquet operations, then stays close enough to make sure what was sold is what gets delivered.

Compensation in these roles is usually base salary plus commission, so the Director is measured on booked revenue, conversion and client satisfaction. The role reports to the General Manager or Director of F&B and works daily with the Executive Chef and Banquet Manager.

Candidates come from catering sales, event sales or wedding sales in hotels, clubs, resorts and premium venues, often with a background in banquet operations.
